Anointing of the Sick
Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of Healing through which Christ offers strength, peace, courage, and healing to those who are seriously ill or weakened by old age. Through the ministry of the priest, the Church entrusts the sick person to the Lord, asking Him to strengthen and sustain them during their time of illness.
The sacrament is rooted in the ministry of Jesus, who showed compassion toward the sick and suffering, and in the teaching of the Apostles. Scripture tells us: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
- Peace and courage in facing illness or suffering
- Spiritual strength and consolation
- Forgiveness of sins, when the person is unable to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
- Union with Christ in suffering
- Healing, according to God’s will
- Preparation for the final journey, when the person is seriously ill or approaching the end of life.
The Anointing of the Sick is not only for someone who is dying. It may be received by a person who is seriously ill, facing major surgery, experiencing a significant decline due to age, or whose condition has become more serious.
The sacrament reminds us that we are never alone in times of illness and suffering. Christ remains close to us, strengthens us through His grace, and calls the Church to accompany and care for those who are sick.
